While working for an agency, I got the opportunity to design a couple of limited edition beer labels. We were given unbounded creative freedom so I jumped at the chance to weave in my own illustrations.
Singularity Imperial Stout
This illustration is a play on the duality between humans and technology. At first glance, it’s the classic representation of AI becoming self-aware as we continue building applications that can learn, essentially making machines that can mimic us.
But are we trying to make robots more human or is technology making all of us more robotic?
We behave robotically going through our daily routines, social media dividing people instead of connecting them, perhaps people need to achieve “singularity” – an awakening – to find their humanity.
This illustration questions whether the robot is becoming more human or if the human is becoming the robot. Makes for excellent discussion over drinks with friends.
Malcontent Old Ale
This label didn’t end up seeing the light of day but I like how it turned out. For the concept, I chose the rebellious nature of the definition and created a character who defiantly breaks through her black and white world to make her mark.
malcontent: one who is in active opposition to an established order or government : REBEL
Her breaking of rules is marked by the symbol of anarchy she scribed into the name of the label with the red marker tucked over her ear.
