Pine & Iron Axe Throwing

This project came through the Mount Hook studio I run with my partner and was one of the most unique assignments I’ve worked on. We we approached by Pine & Iron to create several batches of decorative axes for their two CT locations. Sadly they are no longer in business but grateful for the chance to do something unique.

Prime time

Creating the canvas for each batch was quite a production but was oddly satisfying. Something about seeing that smooth clean surface waiting to welcome the inks that followed. That feeling of getting a brand new sketchbook. It’s the sense of infinite emptiness balanced with infinite possibility.

For some batches, we kept portions of the wooden handle exposed and a dipping technique suited this extremely well.

Layering inks

Using alcohol inks, we formed layered patterns of color along the handle and head.

The axes were treated with a protective clear coat in a make-shift tent.

Then got re-packaged in the bags and box they came in.

One-off editions

In the initial stages, I played around with illustrating characters on the blade but decided not to go that route. During the process of primer dipping, I had a vision of an axe with rainbow sprinkles on it so I made one. It was fun to play with changing the perception of something so hard and sharp and turning it into something soft and sweet.
